Differences between EVA Foam, Rubber Mats and PVC Tiles for Gyms and Fitness Flooring

When choosing the right flooring for a gym, fitness room or training area, two common options often come up: EVA foam tiles and rubber tiles. While they may look similar at first glance, there are significant differences that affect safety, durability and professional suitability.

EVA foam: suitable for
light use, not for intensive training

EVA foam flooring is often chosen for its low cost and lightweight properties. Made from Ethylene Vinyl Acetate, it’s a soft foam-like material with a cushioned surface. This gives it a comfortable appearance, but in practice it offers very little shock absorption or support under heavy impact.

During intense fitness activities, weightlifting or dropping equipment, EVA foam tiles can easily get damaged or shift out of place. They also increase the risk of injuries during jumps or high-impact exercises.

EVA is therefore mainly used in play areas at home settings or as a temporary solution or for light activities like yoga. Rubber United does not recommend EVA foam for professional use in commercial gyms or sports facilities. However, our Tatami mats in 25mm and Tatami Mats 40mm thickness are also made from EVA foam but have a higher density, making them highly suitable for martial arts such as judo and taekwondo.

Rubber tiles: professional choice with grip and shock absorption

Rubber interlocking tiles are specifically designed to withstand heavy use. They are made from solid rubber and offer:

  • Excellent impact absorption
  • Anti-slip surface, even with moisture or sweat
  • High durability and shape retention
  • Noise reduction properties

This makes rubber tiles a global standard in professional gyms, fitness centres, crossfit boxes and multi-purpose training rooms.

Note: rubber gym tiles are intended for indoor use. Outdoor installation is only possible if the area is fully covered and protected from the elements.

Why Rubber United recommends Rubber Mats instead of PVC tiles

At Rubber United, we are committed to quality. That’s why we DO NOT recommend PVC tiles for gym flooring. Our rubber tiles are thoroughly tested for safety and durability and provide a reliable foundation for any commercial sports environment. PVC Tiles have no shock absorption and are therefore not advised as sports flooring.
